Books, Braids, and Trains: New Purchases for the Canada Council Art Bank Collection
By: ArtBank / 19 April 2022We are pleased to announce that the Canada Council Art Bank has recently added 10 artworks by Black artists to its collection.
Chantal Gibson, Outlines in British History: a/Historical In(ter)vention (2019-2022)
The purchased works are by artists from British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec. Each one of these artists is an emerging, mid-career, and established talent that is new to the collection held by the Art Bank. Among them is Deanna Bowen, a 2020 GGArts recipient.
In keeping with the Canada Council’s strategic priorities of fostering a more inclusive and sustainable arts sector, adding these works to the Art Bank’s collection addresses a historical imbalance that had previously left Black artists underrepresented.
Stéphane Alexis, Box Braids no.1 (2020)
The addition of these works provides Art Bank clients with an expanded and more diverse offering. It also increases the potential for public engagement with contemporary art and exposure for these works when they are featured in various exhibitions and outreach activities.
Everyone who lives or visits the National Capital Region is invited to take advantage of the opportunity to see one of the acquired works: Take the Train by Eklipz, while it is on exhibition as part of Still Tho: Aesthetic Survival of Hip-Hop’s Visual Art. It will be in the Âjagemô Exhibition Space at 150 Elgin Street, in Ottawa, until May 23, 2022.
